This recipe is almost too simple to share — but it’s one of those back pocket staples I find myself reaching for all summer long, and I just had to put it out there. When I went looking for a good homemade iced tea recipe I was honestly surprised by how sweet and specific some of them were.
So I figured out my own formula that makes the perfect homemade iced tea every time. One that tastes great every single way you make it, uses ingredients you already have on hand, and doesn’t have that heavy simple syrup sweetness that can make iced tea feel more like a dessert than a refreshing drink.
I’ve made this every which way — different teas, different sweeteners, different add-ins — and it has never once missed. Adults love it, kids love it, and once you make it a couple of times you’ll have the formula memorized without even trying. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Just right. Consider this your new go-to summer drink.

Recipe Tips
blend teas: I like doing 2 black or green tea bags and 2 fruity or herbal tea bags like raspberry, ginger, peach, lemon balm, mint – have fun with it!
decaffeinate it: feel free to do all herbal teas so there is no caffeine! Or use decaffeinated black tea, earl grey, or green tea.
serve a crowd: double this recipe if you’re hosting and everyone wants a refreshing beverage!
experiment with herbs: muddle in some herbs like mint, basil or lemon balm for extra flavour.
use hot water: steeping a quart in hot water and then topping with cold cools it down faster.
cocktail it: add your favourite spirit to it, I think gin would taste fantastic!

Ingredients
- tea bags: or loose leaf tea.
- sugar: cane sugar is nice or honey is great too!
- water: a little hot, a little cold.
- lemon: 1-2 depending on juiciness
Materials
- half gallon jar or pitcher for mixing and storing

Step-by-Step Instructions
STEP 1: BREW THE SWEET TEA
In a 1/2 gallon jar, add about 4 cups of hot water (boiled or very hot from the tap). Add your sweetener and tea bags. Stir and steep for 5–15 minutes depending on how strong you like it. Remove the tea bags.
Note: You can use honey or cane sugar to sweeten. Use 1/4 cup if you like it less sweet or 1/3 if you like it a little sweeter. We find that 1/3 cup is the sweet spot. Start with less and add more to taste. The lemon juice will cut the sweetness later.
STEP 2: ADD LEMON
Squeeze in the juice of 1–2 lemons depending on how juicy your lemons are and how bright and citrusy you want it. Give it a good stir.
STEP 3: COOL AND DILUTE
Add about 4 more cups of cold water to bring it to a full 8 cups and help it cool down faster. Give it a stir.
STEP 4: REFRIGERATE
Transfer to a pitcher or put a lid on your jar and refrigerate until fully cold before serving — at least 1–2 hours. Serve over ice.
