With a new baby, daily showers are not always in the cards. But I do this hair mask at least once a month because it makes me feel like a new person.

My hair lives in a braid most days. It keeps it protected from little grabby hands, prevents knots, and it’s just easier. But braids mean less airflow and buildup creeps in faster than you’d think. Add summer sweating, lake water, pool water — you know how it is.

With just 3 simple ingredients this hair mask cuts through all of it. My scalp feels clean, my hair feels lighter and softer, and the whole process feels like a proper act of self care in the middle of a very full life. It’s one of those simple things I look forward to every month.

Why You’ll Love This Hair Mask Recipe

  • make with only 3 ingredients you’ll find in your kitchen
  • removes buildup
  • makes your hair feel light and smooth after
  • it’s an easy and natural DIY recipe

Recipe Tips

leave it in: Leaving this hair mask in for 20-60 minutes gets the job done! Don’t rush the process, let it work its magic.

add essential oils: I like to add rosemary essential oil for hair growth or lavender because I love the smell, or both!

eat the leftovers: This one is a joke… but you could eat the leftovers, that’s how natural it is!

Ingredients

  • Greek yogurt: Greek is thicker and easier to apply. Learn to make your own here.
  • apple cider vinegar: raw is best for removing buildup and balancing pH.
  • honey: raw is always best for softening.
  • essential oils (optional): I like rosemary, lavender, peppermint or tea tree oil.

Materials

  • little bowl for mixing
  • hair elastic for wrapping your hair into a bun

Step-by-Step Instructions

STEP 1: MIX
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix until well combined.

STEP 2: DAMPEN YOUR HAIR
Wet your hair before applying — not soaking wet, just damp. This helps the mask distribute evenly and absorb better.

STEP 3: APPLY
Working in sections, apply the mask from roots to tips. Really work it into your scalp — that’s where the buildup lives and where you’ll feel the biggest difference.

STEP 4: TWIST AND WAIT
Twist your hair up into a top bun and let the mask sit for anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes. The longer you leave it the better. This is a good time to do a face mask, take a bath, or just sit and do nothing for once.

STEP 5: RINSE AND SHAMPOO
Rinse thoroughly in the shower and follow with shampoo only — no conditioner needed. The honey takes care of the moisture so you won’t miss it.

DIY Natural Hair Mask FAQ

Full fat plain Greek yogurt works best — the higher fat content means more moisture and better slip when applying. If you make your own yogurt at home that is ideal. Do not use flavoured or sweetened yogurt, you want plain with live active cultures so you’re getting the probiotic and lactic acid benefits on your scalp.

Once a month is my sweet spot but you can do it every 2–3 weeks if you have significant buildup or an active summer with lots of swimming and sweating. You’ll know it’s time when your hair feels heavy, dull, or your scalp feels congested.

The vinegar smell can be strong when you apply it but it completely dissipates once your hair is rinsed and dry. You won’t smell like a salad, I promise. If you’re sensitive to the smell you can reduce the ACV slightly or add essential oils to overpower the smell.
