I’ve been on a journey to reduce the toxic load of my beauty products. I have yet to create a sufficient shampoo but I have been loving this leave-in conditioner. This one provides hydration and smoothness without adding too much oil to my natural oils.
Why I’m Switching To Low-Toxin Hair Care
Generally, I aim to consume and use ingredients that I can easily pronounce. Conventional hair care products contain a long list of foreign chemicals that are associated with allergic reactions, hormone and reproductive issues, respiratory problems, certain cancers, and are also harmful to the health of our hair!
When we use toxic hair care products, such as harsh shampoos, our scalp is stripped of its natural and restorative oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and redness. As a result, our scalp may over-produce natural oils to compensate for the harsh stripping, leaving our hair feeling greasy and never truly clean.
Using a toxic conditioner can also have negative effects. While it may provide a temporary feeling of silky and smooth hair, frequent usage can lead to product build-up on the scalp. This can clog pores and block hair follicles, impeding new hair growth and causing issues with natural oil regulation.
When in doubt, keep it simple. That is why I love this leave-in conditioner recipe. It is gentle, nourishing, and uses simple, everyday ingredients.
What You’ll Need
- 16 oz. Spray Bottle
- Coconut Milk
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Rosemary Essential Oil
- Vitamin E Oil
- Water
Coconut Milk
Coconut milk is a wonderful natural conditioner. Its high fat content adds moisture to your hair, making it softer, healthier, and more manageable. The vitamins and minerals in coconut milk, including vitamins C, E, and B-complex, as well as iron, calcium, and magnesium, help nourish the scalp, repair damaged hair, and promote hair growth. It also smells great and leaves hair feeling light and hydrated.
This is a great brand of coconut milk that is rich in coconut cream and will provide all the benefits mentioned.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an essential ingredient for natural hair care. Its acidity protects the scalp from dryness, dandruff, and irritation, resulting in softer, shinier, and more manageable hair. Additionally, it effectively removes product buildup from the scalp and promotes the natural cycles of the scalp, ultimately improving growth, restoration, and repair.
This unfiltered apple cider vinegar contains all the beneficial bacteria that provides the benefits mentioned.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary essential oil is best known for its ability to stimulate hair growth by promoting blood flow to the scalp. This process can also strengthen hair follicles and prevent hair loss. It also contains antimicrobial properties which can help combat dandruff, inflammation, and irritation. Rosemary is my favourite essential oil for hair care for these reasons, it also smells nice and fresh.
This is the rosemary essential oil that I use from an affordable brand that I trust.
Alternatively, you can use lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, or peppermint essential oil for similar benefits.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E oil is optional but highly recommended. Its antioxidant properties provide a number of benefits for the health of your hair. These things include the promotion of hair growth, prevention of hair loss, repairs and protects hair follicles, balances oil production, and reduces scalp inflammation and dryness.
This is the vitamin E oil that I use in this recipe. It is pure, affordable, versatile, and one bottle goes a long way.
How and When To Use Coconut Milk Leave-In Conditioner
The way I use this leave-in conditioner allows me to stop using conditioner in the shower. My hair care routine in the shower involves using only a gentle shampoo. Once I get out of the shower, I lightly dry my hair and then spray the conditioner onto my scalp and through the length of my hair.
Massaging the conditioner into your scalp will improve efficacy, otherwise I just let it sit in and I comb through my wet hair using a gentle boar bristle hair brush. Simple as that!
How To Make Coconut Milk Leave-In Conditioner
- Gather Ingredients and Equipment
- Prepare the Base:
- Shake your can of coconut milk well to ensure it’s thoroughly mixed.
- Measure out 2 tablespoons of the coconut milk and add it to your spray bottle.
- Add Essential Oils:
- Add 10 drops of vitamin E oil to the bottle.
- Follow with 15 drops of rosemary essential oil.
- Incorporate the Vinegar:
- Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the mixture.
- Dilute and Shake:
- Top up the bottle with water.
- Secure the lid and shake the bottle thoroughly to mix all the ingredients.

- 2 Tbsp Coconut Milk
- 1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar

- Shake thoroughly before each use.
