I used to buy a facial cleanser for around $16 for a 160mL bottle—insane, right? And yet, it’s probably still cheaper than what some people may spend. It had a laundry list of ingredients but did the job—stripped away grease, grime, and residue, leaving my skin feeling clean. But honestly, it’s just soap doing the work.

After experimenting with different recipes, essential oils, and bottles, I finally found a simple solution that works for me—and I hope it works for you too. Just diluted Castile liquid soap with tea tree oil in a foaming bottle. It doesn’t get much simpler or more effective than that.

What is the Purpose of a Facial Cleanser?

The purpose of a facial cleanser is to effectively remove dirt, oil, makeup, and other impurities from the skin’s surface, preventing clogged pores and helping to maintain a clear complexion.

While it’s not a miracle product, it plays an essential role in keeping the skin clean, soft, and healthy by addressing common issues like excess oil and buildup, which can contribute to breakouts and dull skin.

A good facial cleanser also prepares your skin for the rest of your skincare routine, ensuring that your other products can work more effectively, like honey lavender whipped tallow face cream!

How Do You use a facial cleanser?

Some people use a facial cleanser for their makeup routine, but I keep it simple by using it as part of my shower routine—like shampoo for my face. It’s quick to apply and rinse off, leaving my skin feeling fresh and squeaky clean!

After showering, I follow up with my homemade whipped tallow balm to rehydrate my skin, much like using conditioner but for the face.

Everyone’s skin is different, but I’ve found that less is more, and this routine works perfectly for me. Simple, effective, affordable and nourishing!

3 Simple Ingredients

  1. Water
  2. Liquid Castile Soap
  3. Tea Tree Oil

Let’s get into why I’ve chosen and trust these 3 simple ingredients.

Water

Well, water is water, can’t really go wrong there. It’s simply used to dilute the Castile soap and to produce a foaming effect in the foaming bottle. It’s also very affordable!

Liquid Castile Soap

Castile soap, originating from Castile, Spain, is crafted from plant-based oils such as olive, sunflower, coconut, or hemp. Free of synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals, it’s one of the purest forms of soap available.

This simple, gentle, and effective cleanser is incredibly versatile, making it a popular choice for a range of uses. Personally, I use Castile soap for hand soap and as a facial cleanser, but it can even be used as a base for homemade shampoo!

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the most popular and effective essential oils for natural skin care, and for good reason.

It’s anti-inflammatory, helping to calm irritated or inflamed skin. Its anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties make it effective in treating acne, blemishes, and other skin conditions caused by bacteria or infections. It also soothes and nourishes the skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin types.

Additionally, tea tree oil balances oil production, making it beneficial for both oily and dry skin. It works to cleanse and detoxify the skin by removing impurities, keeping your skin fresh and clear.

What’s more, tea tree oil is gentle and generally well-tolerated by most skin types, making it a versatile addition to your skincare routine. Whether you’re looking to treat acne, reduce redness, or maintain healthy skin, tea tree oil is a natural solution with multiple skin benefits.

Safety

Make sure you keep your eyes closed as you apply and rinse off!

Like with any soap, it can sting your eyes if it gets in!

What You’ll Need

If you’re new to making your own body care products, you might need to do some shopping.

Materials

Foaming Bottle – I love these bottles. They make homemade soap and cleansers so easy to apply without requiring any thickening agent.

Narrow Head Funnel – For transferring your mix to your foaming bottle.

Mason Jar – Any 16 oz. jar for mixing the ingredients.

Ingredients

Water – Any clean water will do.

Liquid Castile Soap – This is a really great deal for Castile soap if you use it for other things. If you just want to start with a little bottle, get something unscented.

Tea Tree Oil – The star of the show. Whatever tea tree essential oil you can get your hands on.
