What Are Aphids?

Aphids are tiny, soft-bodied insects that love your plants. They can be green, black, or brown, and they often cluster on the undersides of leaves or on new growth. Aphids feed by sucking sap from plants, which can weaken the plant and cause it to look unhealthy. They can also produce a sticky substance called honeydew, which can attract other pests and lead to mold growth. Despite their small size, aphids can cause significant damage to plants if they’re controlled.

Aphid Prevention Measures

To keep aphids at bay to avoid even needing an aphid spray, there are a few things you can do:

  1. Attract Ladybugs: Ladybugs LOVE to feast on aphids. To attract ladybugs, try planting calendula, sweet alyssum or marigolds near the plants you want to protect.
  2. Remove Affected Leaves: If you spot a couple here and there, simply remove any part of the plant that is affected.
  3. Companion Planting: Marigolds, garlic, chives, mint, basil, cilantro, catnip, petunias, and more, have strong scents that deter aphids and attract insects that eat aphids.
  4. Spray with Water: If your plants are strong, try spray affected leaves with a strong stream of water. While it won’t fix an infestation, this should keep them at bay.

Ingredients and Materials

  1. Liquid Soap: I used castile liquid soap but dish soap also works.
  2. Water
  3. Peppermint Essential Oil: This is a great brand for essential oils.
  4. Quart Mason Jar With a Lid
  5. Spray Bottle: I usually like to use these spray bottles.

How to Make Aphid Spray

Grab your quart mason jar and add 1 Tbsp of liquid soap.

Fill the jar to the top with cold water.

Add 3-5 drops of peppermint oil.

Place the lid on tightly and shake.

Pour into a spray bottle or screw on a spray attachment to your mason jar.

Spray the underside of affected leaves in the morning and evening until the problem resolves. This could take 3-5 days.

Once the problem is resolved, make sure you wash down the sprayed leaves with water to remove soap residue before harvest.
